Richard A. Shafer

RICHARD A. SHAFER, 65, of Springfield, Ohio passed away September 18, 2018. He was born January 28, 1953, the son of Almeda (Lawrence) Shafer and Robert Shafer, Sr. He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran. Richard was an avid motorcycle rider and would hop on his Harley-Davidson and ride for miles and miles, often with no destination in mind. He was born to ride! If you knew Richard, his closet only consisted of Marine and Harley clothing! He retired from Akzo Nobel following 30 years of employment. He was a proud father and grandfather. His grandkids were his absolute pride and joy! Richard enjoyed classic rock music and old western films. He never passed up a home-cooked meal from his sisters or the chance to make special memories with his best friend, Roger. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Leesa Shafer. Survivors include his two children Richard "Shane" (Shannon) Shafer and Jessi Shafer (Austin), whom he shared with former wife, LuAnn Graves-Shafer; grandchildren Beckham Shafer, Josie Shafer, and Finn Martin; siblings Carolyn (Robert) Wunderly, Robert (Trudy) Shafer, Steve (Patti) Shafer, Pamela Palmer, Cathy McGregor, Jeannie (Randy) Graham, Sandy (Moe) Reese, Becky Shafer-Prissel, and David Shafer; many nieces and nephews; special friends Roger Hawkins, Elizabeth Tucker-Lince and family, Joe Hoffman, Toby Hunter, Dean and Shirley Suttles, Mark and Rachae Henderson, Phil Hawkins, Ron and Patrice Whitmore, Mark and Sharon Bobo, as well as everyone at Akzo. Visitation will be Monday, September 24, 2018 from 6 – 8 PM. in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. The service to honor Richard’s life will be Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Memorial Home with Pastor Dave Perry officiating. Graveside Military Funeral Honors ceremony will directly follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Richard’s three grandchildren in an account at Huntington Bank under the name of Beckham J. Shafer.
