In Loving Memory of Madonna L. McCarthy (Hoening)
November 29, 1934 – January 2, 2025
Madonna passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her children, she was loved for 90 years and 34 days.
Madonna (Donnie) was born to Paul and Rosa Hoening in Burkettsville, Ohio. She had five siblings Carl, Ruby, Eugene, Paul Jr. and Joan.
Madonna graduated from Ansonia High School in 1953 and then from St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Dayton, Ohio in 1956.
Madonna married Charles B. McCarthy on January 24, 1959. They resided and raised their children in Dayton, Ohio on Hudson Avenue. After her husband’s passing, she moved to Oakwood where she owned a duplex with her daughter Cindy. While living in Oakwood she enjoyed her hobbies of sewing, crafts and gardening, and won several “City Beautiful Awards”.
Madonna's nursing career began in 1956, she worked several years at St. Elizabeth Hospital in labor and delivery, then for Dr Norbert Kosater for 30 years, and with Dr Annette Chavez for several years. Her final nursing career stop was at the University of Dayton Student Health Center for 20 years. She retired from UD at the age of 75.
After retiring, she moved into her dream log home with daughter Charlene. Here she continued to enjoy her love of gardening, pulling weeds, cooking, baking and enjoying time with family and friends.
Madonna remained close with many of her nursing school and work friends; Darlene, Bev, Carla, Denise, Sharon and Mary Rita to name a few.
Madonna was a warrior, surviving breast cancer for 20 years, a major stroke in 2015 and a few broken bones along the way.
She is survived by her immediate family:
Cynthia Elaine McCarthy, Charlene Marie Henderson, Bryan Patrick and Katherine (Gueth) McCarthy, Michael (fiancé Emily Kondracki) and Shannon (grandchildren), James Robert and Elizabeth (Harris) McCarthy, Nate, Noah and Donna (Wagner) (grandchildren and spouse), Christopher Lee and Jessica (Adams) Denny, Lilly, Lucas and Lucy (grandchildren)
She also leaves behind her sister Joan Helton (Hoening) and husband Bill Denlinger, sisters-in-law Margaret (Marfay) Hoening and Mary Lou Hoening, brother-in-law George Monnier and many nieces and nephews. Godchildren Jennifer von Fahnestock, Herb Hoening, Georgia Monnier and Linda (Hoening) Boerger.
She is preceded in death by, Charles B. McCarthy (husband), Paul and Rosa Hoening (parents), Carl Hoening, Ruby Monnier (Hoening), Eugene (Pee Wee) Hoening and Paul Hoening, Jr. (siblings), John and Dorthea McCarthy (in laws), John (Fred) and Angela Mae Schubert (in laws), John (JJ) and Patrica McCarthy (in laws).
And so many other loved family members.
A visitation will be held Friday, January 10, 2025, from 5-7pm at Trostel, Chapman, Dunbar & Fraley Funeral Home in New Carlisle, OH. The funeral will be on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Carlisle, Ohio at 10:30. The burial will follow at Calvery Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice, in memory of Donnie’s love for family, faith and service.
