It is with great sadness and much love that the family of Dr. Robert Owen Pyles announce his death. Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather (G-Pa) at age 91 was peacefully surrounded by family in his home on September 29, 2024 when he passed away.
Robert was born to the late Henry Roscoe and Zelda Garnet (Payne) Pyles on January 15, 1933 in Springfield, Ohio. In addition to his parents Robert was predeceased by his amazing wife of 62 years, Carolyn Ann (Conn) Pyles and all but one of his brothers and sisters as well as great grandson Oliver Pyles-Samuel’s. He is survived by his children Ty (Teresa), Tami, Tawnya and Treven Pyles. Grand children Brenda Kulowiyi, Brooke (James) Samuel’s, Kairee (Jonathan) Cedermaz, Amber ( Shane) Robertson, Whitney (Ryan) Pyles-Dodds, Connor (Erika) Pyles, Jacob (Anne) Knierim, Anna (AJ) Theiss and Maddison (Ivy) York-Curtis and great grandchildren Irie, Owen, Eden and Isla Pyles-Samuels, Micah and Willow Pyles-Dodds, Maya and Aurther Cedermaz, Theo Pyles, Arden Kulowiyi, Levi Wallace, Remi and Max Theiss and Payton and Grevin Robertson and sister Gertrude Clark.
As a two year old Robert and family moved to Waterloo, Ohio where he went on to be a star basketball player and valedictorian at Waterloo High School. One of his favorite “claims to fame” was that he never missed a day of school in 12 years. He met his much loved wife at Wilmington College where he received his Bachelor’s degree. In 1956 Robert and and Carolyn were married and in 1963 they decided that he should pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a medical doctor. They moved their three young children to Kentucky so Robert could attend the University of Louisville Medical School. Their fourth child was born while Robert was still in medical school.
Robert completed his Residency at St Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, Ohio and then began his 30 year career in Family Practice in Tipp City, Ohio, where he and Carolyn finished raising their four children. Robert was a compassionate physician and especially loved talking about all the babies he delivered!
Robert was a devoted family man. Some of his favorite things were taking trips with his wife, hiding Easter eggs for the family’s annual Easter egg hunt, playing basketball in the driveway with his kids and grandkids, making homemade vanilla ice cream, the Cincinnati Reds and telling stories about his childhood like “the horse that fell in the well” and “the barn that he and his next oldest brother burned down”. Above all he was a true disciple of Christ. He and Carolyn were long time members of The West Charleston Church of the Brethren, and served in and supported countless volunteer programs, charities and mission trips. His love for God was visible in everything he did.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at The West Charleston Church of the Brethren (4817 OH-202, Tipp city, Ohio 45371) from 1:30 to 3:30 followed by a short service and a meal for all to share. Because of his love for homemade ice cream there will be a homemade ice cream truck at the church as well.
