Stephen (Steve) Wallis Sweely (79) of New Carlisle, OH, passed away early Monday morning, August 14, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. He was the second son of Edna Dorothy (Schramm) Sweely and James Stuart Sweely of Rose Valley, PA. Steve graduated from Perkiomen School, Pennsburg, PA; BS Mathematics from Grove City College, Grove City, PA; and completed post- graduate studies at American University (Washington, D.C.) and the University of Maryland in Mathematics and Computer Science.
Steve served in the US Army during the Vietnam War at the Pentagon, and he was then employed by the US Bureau of the Census and the US Department of the Treasury as a Systems Analyst. For nearly 15 years, he and his wife lived in New Zealand and Australia (where he worked for IBM Global), and they raised sheep and angora goats on small farms. Returning to the States, he worked for IBM Lexington, KY, as a Software Solutions Architect, until he retired in 2015. His hobbies included bridge and chess. Of note, Steve had ten (10) family ancestors who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dr. Gay (Malewicki) Sweely (a professor emeritus); son Charles (Chad) Stewart Sweely; two sisters: Jane Stuart (Bob) Galla and Christine Anne Sweely, plus his deceased brother, James (Jim) Stuart Sweely (Janet); and a number of wonderful nieces and nephews. He will be interned at Acacia Cemetery Mausoleum near Chicago, IL. In lieu of contributions, consider planting a tree in his memory; Steve was a life-long environmentalist, and he would be so pleased with this remembrance.
