Sandra Gray “Sandy” Tutwiler Mitchell went home to be with Jesus on December 9, 2024. Born on October 11, 1944, Sandy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life was a testament to her love for Jesus, her family and friends, and her pets.
Daughter of Kenneth and Alyce Tutwiler, Sandy graduated from Longwood College in Virginia in 1966 and taught at Troy, Staunton, and Elizabeth Schools before staying home with her children. When her children reached school age, she worked at the Miami County Public Library, where she retired in 2017. After retirement, Sandy enjoyed quilting, reading, gardening, caring for her beloved border collies, and spending time with her family and friends. Sandy, an avid baker, always prepared freshly baked cookies and homemade pies, candy, and fudge for the holidays.
Sandy was married to Mark Mitchell for 58 years. Together, they traveled the US and Canada, spent a beautiful month in Alaska in 2000, explored the National Parks, and spent summers up north at the cabin in Nevis, Minnesota. Sandy lived a life dedicated to her Christian faith and was an active member of the Community Bible Church in Tipp City. Known for her caring nature, Sandy loved her many pets, and was always caring for her dogs, feeding the wildlife at the cabin, and filling hummingbird feeders. She was an expert in natural health remedies and always sent a homemade balm or cough syrup if someone was ill. Sandy Mitchell leaves behind a legacy of love, service and kindness.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Mark Mitchell; her sister Kathryn Tutwiler Ingles; four children Micah (Leslie) Mitchell, Noah (Sheila) Mitchell, Nicole (Gabe) Hill, and Andrea Mitchell; three grandchildren Samuel Mitchell, Catherine Mitchell, and Anna Mitchell; and her Border Collie, Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Alyce, and her sister, Margaret Tutwiler Noe.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 P.M. on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Community Bible Church, 1427 W Main St., Tipp City, OH 45371. The Mitchell family hopes friends, family, and former students can join them for the celebration of Sandy’s life.
