Marian H. Guyton

May 28, 1923 — December 2, 2015

Marian H. Guyton, 92, passed away peacefully in Springfield, Ohio on Wednesday, December 2, 2015. She was born in Fremont, Ohio on May 28, 1923, the daughter of Sidney and Julia (Hall) Hampshire. Marian was a 1941 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. She was always a hard worker, and held jobs at both the Hayes Memorial Museum and Fremont Memorial Hospital, saving money so she could put herself through school and realize her dream of becoming a nurse. In 1946, she did just that, earning her Registered Nursing degree from Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital School of Nursing, and began her nursing career in Cleveland. It was then that she met Dr. Donald H. Guyton, who was serving his Residency, and they were married in Cleveland on September 17, 1949. In 1951, they moved to Dr. Guyton’s hometown of Springfield, Ohio, where he established his practice in Pediatric Medicine. Marian stayed at home to raise their four children, and became an ardent volunteer for many causes and service organizations in the Springfield community. When Dr. Guyton spearheaded the Sabin Oral Polio Vaccine campaign in Clark County, Marian worked tirelessly on behalf of the Clark County Medical Auxiliary to ensure that all children in the Springfield area were immunized against polio. She was recognized and commended by the Ohio Medical Board for her efforts. When the youngest of the Guyton’s children was in junior high, Marian decided to go back to work alongside her husband, and she loved every minute of it.

She was never one to mince words, and spoke her mind freely to all patients and parents, giving them advice – solicited or not - about how to raise their children. Many other patients were given kinder, gentler advice. No matter what, Marian was always ready to listen to a patients’ questions and concerns. Marian and Don both had a love for adventure, and during their 46 years of marriage, traveled all over the world, learning about other people, cultures, customs, art, history, and religions, and made many, many friends all over the world. When Marian and Don retired, Marian did not sit still. She began swimming at the YMCA three times each week, and became even more involved in her church. As a life-long learner, Marian continued her education at Clark State Community College where she took classes into her late 80’s, and reveled in studying History, Religion, Art, and Creative Writing in order to satisfy her thirst for knowledge. Marian was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church, The Clark County Medical Alliance, The Review Club, The Springfield Museum of Art, Wittenberg Guild, The Young Woman’s Mission, and numerous other organizations. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Deborah S. and John Richard Rowland of Kiawah Island, South Carolina, and Anne Guyton-Dunbar and Richard L. Dunbar of Springfield, Ohio; two sons and one daughter-in-law: D. Christopher Guyton I, Springfield, Ohio, and Donald H. Guyton II and Dr. Susan Witte, Piermont, New York; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth A. and Erich Zorn, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Jennifer L. Rowland, Killeen, Texas, David C. Guyton II, Springfield, Ohio, Nicholas A. Guyton, Columbus, Ohio, Alexander J. Guyton, Long Island City, New York, Tess Felter and Benjamin Felter, both of Piermont, New York; one great-granddaughter, Cora E. Zorn, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Dr. Richard A. and Mildred Guyton, Akron, Ohio; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, Dr. Donald H. Guyton, her brother and sister-in-law William H.E. and Evelyn Hampshire, two-sisters-in law and one brother-in-law: Pauline and Ober Spencer, and Ruth Guyton. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 6, 2015 from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. The funeral service to honour Marian’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 7, 2015 at Christ Episcopal Church with The Reverend Charlotte Reed officiating.
