Hazel Ivy Doreen Underwood

Hazel Ivy Underwood, 99, of New Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. She was born to parents Horace and Helen Marshman in Portsmouth, England on November 14, 1924. Hazel and her future husband, U.S. Army Veteran James Thomas Underwood of Big Spring, TX, were pen pals for quite some time. She traveled from England to the U.S. to meet James and they were later married in 1955. Hazel had many interesting stories of her life in England before moving to the States and raising her family. She was a lovely soul who loved her family and treated everyone with kindness and a smile. All who met her loved her and remarked that “she is just the sweetest lady.” We will miss her sweet spirit. Hazel is preceded in death by her husband James Thomas Underwood; sisters Pansy Freeman and Iris Marshman; brother Horace Marshman; and her parents Horace and Helen Marshman. She is survived by her sons James Robert (Terry) Underwood and Thomas Bruce (Sonia) Underwood; grandchildren Robert Wayne (Angela) Underwood, Bryan James (Gabby) Underwood, Nicole Underwood, Jennifer (Brad) Bollinger, Kristi (Andrew) Francis, and Randy (Rachel) Harrelson; 17 great-grandchildren; sister Myrtle Liffick; and brother Robert Marshman. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Hazel’s sister Myrtle Liffick and her four amazing daughters, Barb Petrella, Janet Blair, JoAnn Rice, Chris Liffick and their extended families in Ohio. We are forever grateful for the way they loved and cared for her to the very end. Visitation will be held Monday, April 22, 2024, from 12-2pm at Trostel, Chapman, Dunbar & Fraley Funeral Home.
