Douglas Charles Shylo

July 3, 1952 — July 12, 2023

Douglas Charles Shylo, 71, affectionately known as “Uncle Doug” by family members passed away unexpectedly on July 12, 2023.  Doug was born July 3, 1952 in Berea, Ohio, the son of Anthony J. and Stella (Roman) Shylo.  He attended Olmsted Falls High School, received an A.A. degree in electronics technology from Cuyahoga Community College and studied Economics at Ohio Wesleyan University.

He is survived by his brother Bruce (Karen); sisters, Betty (Randy) Milner and Cynthia (Ladislov) Shylo; nephew Mike (Winnie) Milner and children (Eric, Caroline and Allison); nephew Brad (Laura) Milner and child (Mia); aunts, Helen Roman and Anne Wowchuk; uncle, Edward Roman; and cousins Donald (Donna) Sabatini, Deb (Dennis) Madge, Melissa (Mike) Blackwood, Kathy (Warren) Manning, Carol (David) Vester, B.J. (Rocky) Mercier, Kelly (Tim) Beck, Leslie (Joe) Deleo, Marian (Michael) McGuire, Robert (Diana) Roman, and Edward (Sandi) Polonoski.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Anthony R. Shylo and sister, Roberta L. Shylo.

Doug was in the Merchant Marine and sailed for several years on the Great Lakes.  He also worked in the Ohio State University Hospital system and in the hospitality industry in Columbus, Chicago, New Mexico and Springfield.

Doug loved his annual pilgrimages to visit aunts, uncles and cousins in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, his parents place of birth.  He regaled them with family stories and his keen wit.  Uncle Tom Martin said that “if he had a son he would want him to be like Doug.”  He was kind and generous to friends and was always willing to help.  His loving care allowed his mother to live in her own home until the age of 96. He enjoyed music, was an avid reader of history and a passionate Ohio State football fan.  He loved attending family events and spending time with his nephews and grand nieces and nephew.  Doug was the embodiment of perseverance and grit as he lived with COPD and battled lung cancer without complaint.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Springfield Assisted Living for the kind and compassionate care provided to Doug while he was a resident.  Special thanks are extended to the staff, especially nurses Karen, Karen, and Brooke; Dana and her daughter; and Brittany.  The family is also extremely grateful to the Springfield Cancer Center for the excellent treatment they provided.  All of you are heroes.

Funeral arrangements are being provided by Richards, Raff and Dunbar.  A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at a later date.
