Dorothy Jane "Dode" Butts-Slagle

Butts, Dorothy (Dode) Jane Newland Slagle, 80, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, May 8th, 2016, in Essex Nursing Home in Springfield. She was born on November 26th, 1935, in Unionville Center, Ohio, the daughter of Carl E. Newland and Mary E. (Miller) Newland. She graduated from Radnor High School, Class of 1953. She then graduated from the Community Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. Dode was so very proud of her profession and was head nurse of surgery until her first child was born in 1962. She was a member of the Clark-Shawnee School Board for 15 years, 7 of which she was President. She was a member of the Women’s Republican Club, Zonta, a former member of Eastern Star, and in later years served as Vice President of the Clark County Blind Association. Dode was an avid golfer, even after losing most of her vision, and most enjoyed golfing with her favorite cousin, Ronnie Newland. She was a devout member of Faith United Methodist Church. Dode is survived by sister and spouse Ruth Ann and Ned Roush (Marysville) and brother Bobby Newland (Pinellas Park, FL); her only daughter, Laura and her husband Nick Bailey, her eldest son William (Bill) Slagle and wife Cheryl (Beavercreek), and youngest son John Slagle and life partner Alex Martinez (Chicago); grandchildren Ivy Hatcher and partner Zach Foulke, and Connor Slagle; one dearly loved great-grandson, Zachary Foulke, Jr.; two step-granddaughters Melanie Perkins and Alison Middleton and their families; and a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Dode was preceded in death by her baby brother William Newland, first husband Wild Bill Slagle and second husband Charles Butts. The family would like to thank Crossroads Hospice, especially Say, Amanda and Tameka for their wonderful care. A funeral service to honor Dode will be Thursday at 1:00 PM in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME, with Pastor Kyle Kirchner officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services.
