Dawn Marie Boyer of Enon, Ohio, passed away at the age of 62 on December 19th, 2023 after a twenty-year battle with multiple illnesses, with metastatic breast cancer ultimately claiming her life. Dawn’s life could be separated in two distinct chapters. The first younger and vibrant, dynamic, humorous, and as a hardworking butt kicker, known for her spirited and formidable nature. However, as her health challenges mounted, Dawn's approach to life evolved. She became more reflective, reserved and quiet, channeling her strength into bravely confronting the various health adversities she faced.
Dawn entered the world on March 2, 1961, born in Springfield, Ohio, as the beloved daughter to the late Jerry and Dixie (Ellison) Dray. She shared a cherished and close relationship with both her parents, especially forming a unique bond with her father. While her interactions with her mother had their complexities, the strength of their connection was evident in their nearly daily conversations. Dawn had a unique and enduring bond with her older sister, Leslie. To Dawn, Leslie was more than a sister; she was a confidante, a partner-in-crime, and a best friend. Their relationship was the essence of sisterhood, filled with daily conversations, shared adventures, and an unbreakable bond that only sisters can understand.
John and Dawn were high school sweethearts and started dating when Dawn was a freshman and John was a senior. Their initial date at McDonald's laid the foundation for a lifetime of shared meals and joy. Dawn, always recognizable by her smile and her distinctive bandana, was a beacon of happiness as they fondly recalled their early years together. They exchanged vows on July 7, 1979, just after Dawn's graduation, embarking on a 44-year marriage defined by deep love and mutual respect. John's endearing term for her, 'Rosie', was inspired by the warm glow of her cheeks. Together, they nurtured a family with their children, Brad and Amelia, in a household of love and laughter.
Shortly after saying “I do”, Dawn moved in next door to her in-laws. Life with her in-laws was nothing short of a sitcom episode similar to Everybody Loves Raymond, complete with loveable characters and comedic situations. Living next to her in-laws wasn't just about the quirky moments; it was a blessing that enriched her life in countless ways. These times weren't always easy, but they were invaluable in shaping their family life. Dawn often said that Virginia taught her how to be a mother – a testament to their deep connection. She called them both Dad and Mom and her relationship with her in-laws was filled with love, laughter, and of course a little bit of loving meddling.
Dawn was profoundly dedicated to her family. She was the ultimate super fan, never missing a single event for her kids or even John's softball games, come rain or shine. Dawn was the quintessential mama bear – fiercely protective of her children. If she ever sensed someone was troubling her kids, she was ready to spring into action, with a kind of zest that only a devoted mother could muster. Her spirited defense was part of the loving, fierce charm that made Dawn an unforgettable character. She found joy in cooking and hosting meals during the holidays. Ensuring that the family gathered for dinner every night was a priority for her and John when the children were living at home. She managed to maintain this tradition even while balancing a full-time job and along with all of the family’s commitments.
Prior to her illness, Dawn was known for her impeccable fashion sense and a particular fondness for maintaining her appearance, with a special emphasis on her hair. Frequent, panicked yells of "Don't touch my hair!" were regularly shouted. Even in her final moments, Dawn inquired how her hair looked.
Dawn had a passion for sewing, a skill she learned from her Aunt during her youthful summers in Washington Court House. Over the years, she expanded her expertise through various forms of needlework, eventually specializing in quilting. She crafted stuffed animals for family members and friends, Halloween costumes for her children, and numerous quilts for others. Passionate about passing on her love for sewing, she taught her granddaughter Avery several summers for 4-H. Dawn had plans to teach all her granddaughters, with Hazel starting this summer. Her amazing sewing skills will always be remembered by her family. Dawn also cherished summer days spent on her boat at Indian Lake with her family, where they enjoyed swimming, sunbathing, and creating unforgettable memories together.
Dawn, an honors graduate from JVS and Greenon High School in 1979, began her career as a Dental Assistant, later becoming a Medical Assistant. Her journey took her to Indian Valley Middle School as a bookkeeper, then moving to the Treasurer's office of the Mad River Green Local School District, managing payroll as the Treasurer’s Assistant. She concluded her professional career in the Treasurer's Office at Fairborn City School. In retirement, Dawn's greatest joy was caring for her great nephew Grady and granddaughters Avery and Hazel, a role she cherished deeply until her illness worsened.
Her father, mother, Granddaughter, Campbell, brother-in-law, Doug Wilt and Great-Nephew, Grady Neff, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband John, Enon; a son Brad (Laura), South Charleston; and daughter Amelia (Emily), Bexley. Three granddaughters Avery, Hazel & Dorothea Boyer. Survived by sisters Leslie Wilt, Springfield; Suzanne Folck (Fred), Wellington, KY; and brother Preston Dray (Brandy); Enon. In addition, her legacy lives on through numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who cherish her memory. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 4, 2023, from 10-11am with the memorial service starting at 11:00am at Knob Prairie United Church of Christ, 203 W. Main St., Enon, OH 45323.
