Charles Eugene “Gene” Pencil, aged 83, of Springfield, Ohio, passed away on November 22, 2024. Born on May 30, 1941, Gene was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and educator whose life was a testament to dedication, community service, and family love.
Gene's lifelong career with Northwestern Local Schools began as a student, where he first nurtured his passion for learning. He returned to his alma mater as a teacher, inspiring countless students with his gentle wisdom. His career progressed to administration, where he served as an administrator, and ultimately, he was appointed Superintendent, a role he held with honor and integrity until his retirement. After his retirement Gene continued to serve his community by sitting on Northwestern’s School Board and as a truant officer for Clark County.
Gene was married to Carolyn (Bowers) Pencil for 50 years, sharing a life filled with love, laughter, and adventures. Together they raised three children, Nicia (Paul) Seibold, Tom (Karin) Pencil, Lisa (Chris) Miller.
Gene's pride and joy extended to his 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; each of whom he adored and supported in their endeavors.
After Carolyn's passing, Gene found love again with Rozanne, with whom he shared ten beautiful years. Roze's companionship brought additional joy into his later years.
Beyond his professional life, Gene was deeply committed to his community. He was an active member of several organizations, including the Lions Club, where he contributed to various community service projects, 4-H, fostering youth development in agriculture and life skills, and FFA (Future Farmers of America), supporting agricultural education. Additionally, he was a devoted member of his church, where he taught Sunday School for many years, sharing his faith and values with multiple generations.
Gene was known for his gentle nature, kindness, and respect towards everyone he met. His hobbies were an extension of his personality; he loved woodworking and crafting beautiful pieces that are cherished by family and friends. He was passionate about farming, and county fairs and was a classic tractor enthusiast.
Gene is survived by his second wife, Rozanne Pencil; his children, Nicia (Paul), Tom (Karin), and Lisa (Chris); his 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Heather (Scott) Meyers and Hans (Sally) Miller; four step-grandchildren; sisters, Jane Bowers, Nancy Freshour, Patty Dunn; brother, Terry Pencil, and a host of extended family and friends who will dearly miss his presence.
