Betty Jean Schumm

Betty Jean Schumm (Hopkins), age 92, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2021, in the loving care of her family in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was born October 10, 1929, in Cambridge, New Jersey to the late Alva and Gladys (Botkin) Hopkins. On June 21, 1951, she married Richard Carl Schumm, and he preceded her in death on December 15, 2000.Betty is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Trina Schumm of El Dorado Hills, CA; daughter and son-in-law Sandy and Grimes Redd of Scottsdale AZ; six grandchildren, Garrett (Kendal) Redd of Walnut Creek, CA, Brennan (Erin) Redd of Phoenix AZ, Parker Redd of Scottsdale, AZ, Kevin Schumm of Roseville, CA, Kyle (Erica) Davis of Sacramento, CA and Carson Schumm of El Dorado Hills, CA; two great grandchildren and a sister, Peggy Hopkins Ashton of Summerdale, Alabama. In addition to her parents and her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Connor Grimes Redd in 2010. Betty was a 1947 graduate of Oak Park High School in Oak Park, Illinois. In 1951 she graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a degree in home economics. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Betty started her teaching career in New Jersey and then became a teacher in the Pittsburgh, Pa., public school system. After moving to Troy, Ohio with her family in 1969, Betty became an active member of the Troy Skating Club. She served as president of the club and a board member for several years. Betty was also a U.S. Figure Skating Association judge. She spent many years of retirement near South Padre Island, Texas. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, traveling, visiting the beach, and entertaining friends in her home. A private burial will be held at New Carlisle Cemetery.
